How many care homes are there in England?

Rare.Monitor counts 14,465 care homes on the Care Quality Commission location register for England in July 2026, holding 444,561 registered beds between them. They are run by 7,148 separate legal-entity providers, an average of 2.02 sites each. Of those sites, 10,366 (71.7%) are residential homes and 4,099 (28.3%) are nursing homes.

Who is the biggest care home operator in England?

Ranked as single legal entities, Barchester Healthcare Homes is the largest, holding 2.56% of England's registered care home beds in July 2026. Combining corporate families at Companies House level puts HC-One first on 2.95%. No operator holds 3% of national bed capacity on either basis. Care UK follows on 1.78% and Anchor Hanover on 1.47%.

How concentrated is the English care home market?

The 50 largest providers by registered beds hold 23.46% of England's care home capacity from 15.27% of its sites, on Rare.Monitor data for July 2026. The top 10 hold 12.50% of beds across 913 sites. The remaining 7,098 providers hold 340,272 beds across 12,256 sites, roughly three-quarters of everything registered in England.

Why is the English care home market so fragmented?

Care home groups are property businesses as much as care businesses. Each home carries a building, a local authority commissioning relationship and a resident cohort, and none of those three transfer with the deed. Fee settlements are negotiated council by council, so a national operator cannot price nationally. A decade of buy-and-build has taken the 50 largest providers to 23.46% of England's registered beds and no further.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

Nursing homes employ registered nurses on site and take higher-acuity residents; residential homes provide personal care without on-site nursing. Both register with the Care Quality Commission as care homes, so they appear in the same category on the location register. In England in July 2026, 10,366 of 14,465 sites (71.7%) are residential and 4,099 (28.3%) are nursing.
