Profiling the UK Private Ophthalmology market

Last month (May 2024) saw the release of our latest Rare: Monitor stats report on the private UK ophthalmology market. This report provides you with a snapshot into the current state of the market, amongst the providers that offer ophthalmology services. You can access the report here.

The UK, like many other countries around the world, is seeing an increase in a geriatric population. Unfortunately such cohorts are highly prone to a number of ocular morbidities which in turn puts pressure on an already strained public care system.

In response to this, the UK has seen an increase in private provision, which has led to experts voicing concern that the NHS will lose much of the talent to the private market.

We wanted to understand how large the UK Private ophthalmology sector is and what it currently looks like.

Highlights from our data:

11% of UK private health provider provider private ophthalmology treatment

Around 1 in 10 (11%, n= 1,401) UK private health providers now offer some form of Ophthalmology treatment.

85% of UK Private Providers are Single Location Operators

Despite the expansion of large and medium sized, multi-site private providers in recent years, (such as Newmedica and Optegra), the majority of providers are single site operators.
